My Packing List for an Ironman
Every race weekend starts the same way for me. I spread everything out on the floor, check it off one item at a time, and still convince myself I've forgotten something. After enough Ironman races, I've realized that packing isn't just about bringing gear. It's about removing unnecessary stress so you can focus on racing. This is the exact checklist I use before every Ironman. Im going to break it down into the three disciplines and also include a miscellaneous section for other critical items.
ESSENTIALS:
Tri-suit: Bring what you know fits well and dont try anything new.
Smart Watch: My Garmin Fenix is essential especially for the swim and run portion of the race.
Photo-ID: You need this to check in for race day. DONT FORGET IT!!!
Passport: If an out of country race.
Make sure you have your QR code sent by IRONMAN ready in your email as its needed for check-in (screenshots typically work but be ready for anything)
Hygeine: Dont be dirty y’all.
Glasses/ Sunglasses: You want to see and they’re expensive. dont forget your glasses
SWIM:
Goggles: The most important thing to bring is your goggles. Yes, they sell them at races but having a pair that you are comfortable with is very important
Training Suit/ Speedo: I bring this for a pre-race practice swim so that I can get acclimated to the water and find my rythm prior to race morning. As all triathletes know, consistency is key and keeping your feel for swimming is extremely important.
Wetsuit: If conditions allow, the wetsuit provides extra bouyancy and warmth. I bring my wetsuit if it’s likely to be race legal or right on the cutoff line.
Swimskin: For conditions that dont allow a wetsuit I like to being my Roka swimskin as well to stay tight in the water and reduce drag coming from my tri suit. like the wetsuit, I’ll bring it if theres a chance that the swim will not be wetsuit legal.
Training Cap: I bring a silicone cap for my training swims prior to race day as I find it to be more comfortable and what i’m used to training in.
BIKE:
Tri Bike: This is obvious.
Cycling Shoes: If you’re running clipless pedals, it’s essential to bring your shoes. Otherwise sourcing new ones will be expensive and irrational.
Helmet: I bring both my Aero helmet and my training helmet to choose what will suit me best for race day.
Bike Computer: Always make sure to bring your bike computer to be able to know distance, time, power, and elevation. This guides your effort and is critical to having enough energy for the run without overexerting yourself.
Taillight: You want to be seen especially if the roads are unfamiliar to you.
Chargers: Your technology is useless if you dont charge it. Always bring every charger to be preparred for pre-race rides/runs and race day.
Watch Charger
Bike Computer Charger
Power Pedal Charger
Taillight Charger (if different from computer charger)
Phone Charger too!
Chest Strap Heart Rate Monitor: This is important as wrist heart race can be inaccurate. I like to put in a new battery in the days leading up as mine doesnt charge.
Water Bottles: Yes, you canbuy them at the race, but if youve already got them, why not just bring them.
Disc Wheel: I transport my bike without the disc on to make sure that it doesnt get damaged. With this comes bringing the “crackpipe” adapter to make sure that you can fill it up on race morning.
Bike Pump: Speaking of wheels, youll definitely need a pump. Ironman supplies some but having your own prevents you from having to wait in line on race morning. Somtimes during travel, tires will lose air with elevation change.
Multi-Hex Tool: To make sure bolts are tight and to do any last-minute adjustments.
Additional Jerseys and Bibs: For training rides you’ll want to have something other than just your tri suit.
Arm and Leg Sleeves: Be ready for a cold race. You never know how the weather is going to shift leading into race day.
Cycling Socks: For training and for race day. I like to wear Rapha or Pedal Mafia.
Run:
Trainers: I always bring my Novablasts or Gel-Nimbus trainers to have a comfortable easy run shoe.
Race Shoes: Bringing my carbon plated ASICS Metspeed Edge is huge for my race day. They force me on to my toes and give a much better return than normal trainers.
Hat: A hat is huge to keep the sun out of your face.
Race Belt: You pin your bib to this. It’s lightweight and makes your bib display properly.
Training Belt: For training runns to bring your phone and any other important things along.
Running Socks: Bring socks with padding so that you can limit blistering, especially in carbon plated shoes.
Training Short and Shirts: Something comfy to shake out prior to race day.
MISCELANIOUS:
Scissors: For cutting up your bike stickers to aestetically display race numbers. Also, for cutting up your race bracelet to make ure it doesnt scratch up your wrist.
Nutrition: Lay it out before you pack it. Bring what youre used to and even add more than you think you’ll need. I make sure to bring:
Carb Mix
Gels: Caffenated and regular
Clif Shot Blocks
Rice Krispy treats for something solid and some quick carbs
Normatec Boots: Perfect for flushing out your legs before race day and for after a grueling day on the course.
Melatonin: Going to bed before race morning can be challenging. The nerves are high and this will help you get the much-needed rest you need.
Any Medication You’re precribed: It can be hard to get what you need when travelling so make sure to bring your meds.
Bring some sort of light jacket and sweatpants. Race morning can be cold. You dont want to lose any extra heat energy if you don’t have to.
Razors and Shaving Cream: I always shave my legs and arms before a race just to get a little extra aero advantage.
Cash: Some bike shops and restraunts may be cash only. I like to bring $200 just in case.
Every athlete has a slightly different system, but this is the checklist that's evolved through dozens of triathlons and multiple Ironman finishes. I still check every single item before leaving the house because the goal isn't to pack perfectly. It's to eliminate the small stressors so all of your energy can go toward executing on race day.
If this checklist helps you avoid forgetting even one important item, then it has done its job.
